Reality Check: Do you Live to Eat, or Eat to Live?

Score yourself on the following statements.
0= Don’t agree
2=Sometimes
3= frequently
4= all the time!

• You think about food all throughout the day, frequently planning the next meal or snack. ___

• Most of your social events revolve around food. You can’t imagine socializing without food being a part of the event.___

• You eat when you are not really hungry. You may see a food and find yourself thinking about it, then focusing or obsessing about it, and then consuming it in a guilt-ridden way.___

• You tend to eat quickly, rather than savoring each bite slowly.___

• You eat large portions of food, and worry when you sit down to a meal that you may not get enough to feel satisfied.___

• You keep snacks and foods at work and are constantly nibbling while you are working.___

• You overeat for the first day or two after your have been to the grocery, wanting to sample and snack on many of the new items you have purchased.___

• Much of your diet is fast foods, packaged meals like microwave dinners, and snack items like chips. You don’t eat fresh fruit and vegetables throughout the day.___

• I get so busy that I forget to eat___

Scoring system:
If your total score is 9-14, you probably do not “Live to Eat”- you have a realistic concept of the importance of food in your life, and have few problems with overeating.

If your score is 15-24, you have some issues with food preoccupation and should consider completing the Food And Feelings Diary, on this website, to gain insight into the feelings and events surrounding your eating behaviors.

If your score is 24 or above, you will want to take advantage of every tool available on this website to identify the reasons why you are so heavily focused on food. You may wish to seek counseling and/or spiritual guidance with your relationship with food, it is overshadowing other important activities that could help you accomplish more in life.
