Food Won’t Fill a God-Sized Hole

My mission is to promote positive changes in personal eating habits by helping people discover their nutritional truths, through God’s divine insight and guidance. You must be clear about the factors that drive you to overeat, if this is an issue for you, and how to restore the right relationship to Him, to put food back in its rightful place in your life.

In the Mind…

We are either living in the spirit, or dying in the flesh. If there is sadness, fear, worry or anxiety in your life, these emotions can be transformed by the Holy Spirit. Many people in our society today are trying to fill a God-sized emotional hole with money, possessions, sex, and food. They are dying in the flesh.

Sometimes we can allow emotions and fears to drive us to eat, creating a stronghold that places food before God. Ask yourself: “Do I live to eat, or eat to live (survive)?”

Philippians 4:6: Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God. And God’s peace, which transcends all understanding, shall garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Any time we focus persistently on food and place it before God, it creates a wrong dependence in our lives. Think about a time when you may have gone to church feeling hungry, and daydreamed about the meal you would eat afterward, rather than hearing the Pastor’s words.

In the Body…

There are compounds produced in the body when you are lacking in sleep, or feeling stressed or depressed, that can increase your appetite for foods that actually stress your body further. These sugary and/or processed foods are usually synthetic, man-made compounds like chips, soft drinks, or snack cakes. Although they can provide temporary relief, the aftermath of eating this junk is a blood sugar crash, and a heavy secretion of insulin that elevates inflammation in the body, known now to be a precursor in the development of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, arthritis, and possibly even cancer. The enemy knows how to break us down, starting with our emotions, if we turn to food instead of God.

In the Word…

Pray for a right relationship to food. Ask God to change your thinking to place food in the right priority in your life. 1 Timothy 6:8: “But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.”

Nourish your spirit with uplifting activities like reading the Word, listening to Christian tapes, and fellowshipping with friends. Look at the choices you make about what you feed your mind and soul. Are you listening to music with poor messages and watching TV shows that celebrate sinful attitudes, like “Desperate Housewives”?

The details of the diet, like carbohydrate, protein, and fat, are just fine-tuning. The key to managing your weight and your eating habits is to first manage your relationship to God- not with God- but how you relate to Him. He is always with us, but we don’t always draw near to Him, bringing Him our attitudes and fears.

Psalm 63:5: “My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods, with singing lips my mouth will praise you.” John 6:27: “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him, God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”
